Mexican Miracle Paintings
20 large-format postcards of unique and charming Mexican votive paintings.
A revolutionary is spared from hanging; a woman falls from a roof but survives; lightning strikes a temple but leaves everyone unharmed; such are the ‘miracles’ depicted in these beautiful votive paintings, captured in 20 large-format postcards to accompany the exhibition 'Infinitas Gracias: Mexican Miracle Paintings'.
Painted by local artists and often on cheap tin roof tiles, these extraordinary images line the walls of many Mexican churches, offering thanks to the saints for answered prayers. A short introduction on the inside back cover places them in context, describing the history and origins of the tradition. Such works of art greatly influenced artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, who were both avid collectors. Dating from the 19th century to the present day, each one records a personal response to the dramas of everyday life.
